Oxytocin is a nine-amino acid neuropeptide produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. It plays a central role in childbirth, lactation, social bonding, and emotional regulation. Clinically, synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) is used to induce or augment labor, control postpartum hemorrhage, and stimulate milk ejection. 

It works by binding to oxytocin receptors in the uterus and mammary glands, triggering uterine contractions and milk let-down.  In the brain, it modulates social behavior, trust, empathy, and sexual function, earning it the nickname “love hormone.” 

Administered via IV, IM, or intranasal spray, it has a short half-life (3–5 minutes).  Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, hypertension, and uterine hyperstimulation.  Prolonged high-dose use may cause water intoxication due to its vasopressin-like effects. 

In research, oxytocin is studied for autism, anxiety, PTSD, depression, and social cognition disorders, with intranasal delivery used to enhance brain access.  It is FDA-approved for obstetric use but remains investigational for behavioral applications.
